An alternate atheism

March 19, 2008

I read an interesting argument the other day, it was a criticism of Paul Tillich, saying that he was an atheist; that this is how he ought to be defined. The argument came from Tillich urging each one of us to look for the God when the God of theism fails.

Let me offer an alternative to atheist: Look at what the man is suggesting, the idea that we already know in our hearts; that beyond the mundane God that controls the universe, and really doesn’t, beyond that flimsy idea there is something greater, something indubitable.

The enormity of this idea is frightening, it is natural that people are frightened by it, argue against it. But in the center of our being is the notion of that that is beyond any and all of this; a presence in every heart.

Look inward, and look again, continue that soaring journey.
